When I Must Leave You

Today my husband and daughter and the rest of his family are celebrating the life of his grandfather who passed away two weeks ago. I am not able to be there but am thinking and praying for everyone. Here is a beautiful poem I received after my grandfather’s passing. The words have stuck with me for years and I would like to share it with all of you. I hope that during a time of grieving in your life you can find comfort in these words as I have.

When I Must Leave You

When I must leave you for

a little while

Please do not grieve and shed

wild tears

And hug your sorrow to you

through the years

But start out bravely with

a gallant smile;

And for my sake and in my

name live on and do all things

the same, Feed not your loneliness

on empty days,

But fill each waking hour

in useful ways,

Reach out your hand in comfort

and in cheer

And I in turn will comfort you

and hold you near;

And never, never be

afraid to die,

For I am waiting for

you in the sky!

  1. Very nice Ashley. I love our grandfather. He always had that kind of rock-solid Clint Eastwood-esque-but-without-the-shady-side aura. Always there. Always can count on him. Cheerful. Gentle. Strong.
